It can be hard to justify choosing a South African protea over so many closely related Australian native plants. But proteas can be more useful domestic-sized shrubs than many banksias, more glamorous than grevilleas and just easier than waratahs. In common with many banksias and grevilleas, lots of proteas like this true sugarbush (Protea repens) provide spectacular flowers with loads of nectar for birds at the wrong end of the season: through autumn and winter.
