The Bottlebrush Grass Tree (Xanthorrhoea macronema) is more grass and less tree. As its trunk remains underground the foliage effect is just like a tuft a grass – until the flowers emerge. Unlike other grass trees, the spikes are short and the white-cream stamens – opening from the bottom up – are long and give it the look of a bottlebrush. It’s slow-growing but once massed up makes an impressive and low maintenance native sward for coastal, bush, mediterranean, bush, cottage or even oriental style gardens.
